Nelly Biography:

Nelly appeared to be a novel idea when he first came out in summer 2000 with Country Grammar, yet he was no one-hit wonder, smash hit track and video Hot in Herre push Nelly to the top of seemingly each and every Billboard chart. Nelly universality is partly rooted in his hometown the Gateway City, technically known as St. Louis, MO, that set him apart from all of the existing rap styles of his period. He was not from the East or West Coast, neither was he from the South. Located in the center of the United States, St. Louis is a Midwestern metropolis halfway between Minneapolis and New Orleans, created upon on the western banks of the Mississippi River. Nelly’s location certainly notifies his rapping style, which is as much country as urban, and his dialect as well, which is as much Southern drawl as Midwestern twang. In addition, Nelly never shied away from a pop-rap method, adopting a singalong vocal style that made his hooks catchier than most, many thanks also in part to his standby producer, Jason “Jay E” Epperson. As a result, Nelly grew to become a rapper capable of crossing virtually all boundaries. His first hit, Country Grammar, became a countrywide summer anthem, and many more smash hits followed.

Born Cornell Haynes, Jr., on November 2, 1974, in St. Louis, Nelly relocated with his mother from the inner city to slightly more suburban University City as a teen. At this time there Nelly primarily attended to baseball as well as rap, developing the St. Lunatics with a group of his friends which includes Big Lee, Kyjuan, Murphy Lee, and City Spud. The St. Lunatics really enjoyed a regional hit in 1996 with the self-produced single Gimmie What You Got, however no recording deal was forthcoming. Discouraged with failed efforts to land a recording deal as a group, the St. Lunatics jointly decided that Nelly would certainly have a better opportunity as a solo act. The rest of the group could quite possibly follow with solo albums of their own. The risk paid off, and soon Nelly caught the interest of Universal, who signed him to a solo deal.

Nelly’s debut album, Country Grammar featuring contributions from the St. Lunatics in addition to the Teamsters, Lil Wayne, and Cedric the Entertainer, and many thanks to the widespread buzz of lead single Country Grammar. Country Grammar debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 album chart, ascending to the top spot soon after. In addition to the Top Ten title track, Country Grammar inspired the creation of the hits singles E.I., Ride wit Me, and Batter Up. In the wake of Nelly’s amazing breakthrough success, he recorded a group album with the St. Lunatics, Free City released by Universal, the album charted Top Three and spawned a reasonable hit, Midwest Swing, which dinged the Billboard Hot 100 at number 88.

The next summer Nelly returned with his 2nd album, Nellyville and the lyrics lived up to his self-proclaimed billing as “#1″ Nellyville topped the Billboard album chart at the same time the Neptunes produced lead single, Hot in Herre, stayed atop the singles chart. In all, Nelly remarkably held the number one spot on ten distinct Billboard charts the week of Nellyville’s release, and he continued to be a chart presence as Nelly released a string of follow up singles Dilemma by Nelly ft. Kelly Rowland, Air Force Ones, Work It ft. Justin Timberlake, and Pimp Juice.

Even once Nellyville ran its course commercially, Nelly’s hit streak carried on unabated, with Iz U as well as Shake Ya Tailfeather keeping Nelly in the limelight while he readied his individually released double-disc Sweatsuit undertaking. Sweat and Suit were led by a pair of red-hot singles Flap Your Wings as well as My Place debuted at the top two positions on the Billboard 200 album chart. Follow-up singles included Tilt Ya Head, Back ft Christina Aguilera, Over and Over ft Tim McGraw, Na-Na-Na-Na ft Jazze Pha, and N Dey Say. Sweat and Suit were later on bundled as Sweatsuit, along with the new track Grillz, itself a number 1 hit. The time between its release and that of Brass Knuckles was the longest Nelly went between albums to date, although he did collaborate often with Ashanti, R. Kelly, and T.I., to mention only a few.

Nelly has really been out of the music industry for quite awhile now, however with Nelly’s single Just A Dream flying up the charts, the buzz is growing. On November 16 Nelly’s new album will be launched. The album is known as 5.0 and there will be tracks with T.I., Akon, Diddy, and Kelly Rowland from Destiny’s Child. The track ft Kelly is a follow up to their hit duet ‘Dilemma‘ that came out in 2002.

In all Nelly received Grammy Awards in 2003 as well as 2004 and starred in the 2005 remake film The Longest Yard with Adam Sandler and Chris Rock. He has two fashion lines, Vokal and Apple Bottoms. He has been referred to by Peter Shapiro as “one of the biggest stars of the new millennium”, and the RIAA rates Nelly as one of the best-selling male artists in American music history, with twenty one million albums distributed in the United States. On December 11th, 2009 Nelly was ranked as the 3rd Top Overall Artist of the 2000-2009 decade by Billboard Magazine.
